Hydroelectric power needs a major river system and enough land to construct the infrastructure required to harness its power. In the region, there are many small hydroelectric power projects that provide electricity to communities that lie outside of the main power grid. Singapore does not have a major river system thus hydroelectric power cannot be harnessed. Tidal power generates some electricity but the energy harnessed is still quite low. There are many on-going research projects in this area in Singapore being led by Energy Research Institute at NTU (ERI@N).
