Course Summary

This online workshop provides attendees with a broad understanding of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), how they are being used around the world to drive investment in renewable energy, and how a robust REC-based scheme could be used in Singapore to increase investment in renewable energy.

Course Outline


- Know some of the benefits and limitations of REC programs
- Understand the fundamentals of registering, selling, settling (surrendering) and tracking RECs
- Be familiar with different mechanisms that can be used to ensure the quality of RECs
- Have a basic understanding of REC market dynamics and the key factors driving supply, demand and price
- Know how RECs can be used to motivate and enable businesses to procure and/or invest in renewable energy
- Understand different international approaches to driving investment in renewable energy through the creation and monetisation of RECs, including policy design considerations
- Be able to differentiate between different types of RECs and know the advantages and disadvantages of each
- Know who the ‘buyer’ of RECs is under different policy designs
- Have an understanding of REC market dynamics and the key factors driving supply, demand and price
- Comprehend the role (actual and potential) of RECs in the Singaporean and regional context
- Receive any updates from the SEAS Work Group on progress made to date
- Understand the future developments in the renewable energy policy space globally.

Speaker

Charlie is a Principal Consultant at Point Advisory, one of Australia’s leading sustainability consulting firms. He leads the firm’s efforts in the areas of renewable energy, energy efficiency, greenhouse gas management and the provision of assurance services under various carbon and energy-related compliance programs.

Charlie has over 15 years’ experience in the sustainability sector, both as a consultant and working in industry. He has worked with clients across most industry and government sectors.

In recent years, Charlie has contributed to the development of several high-profile energy and net zero emissions strategies, including the ACT’s Net Zero by 2045 commitment and the NSW Government’s Energy Management Systems program. He also audits both projects and liable entities under the Renewable Energy Target.

Charlie holds a Master of Environmental Management from the University of New South Wales, and Bachelors degrees in Economics and Arts from the Australian National University.

Prior to joining Point Advisory, Charlie was a Senior Manager in the Climate Change and Sustainability Services team at Ernst & Young (EY).
