About The Competition

The Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore (SEAS), in collaboration with the Climate Technology Initiative Private Financing Advisory Network (CTI PFAN) and International Center for Environmental Technology Transfer (IC ETT) of Japan, will be holding a Renewable Energy Investor Forum at the Asia Future Energy Summit (AFES) on 22 October 2012, in Singapore. This Forum will showcase high quality clean energy technologies, products or services from Singapore and around the Asia region in front of some of Asia’s leading investors. This Call For Proposals (CFP) seeks project proposals from clean energy entrepreneurs and businesses that are financially viable, socially responsible and environmentally beneficial. Participation is targeted at 2 groups of applicants:

1. project developers, businesses and entrepreneurs based in Singapore; these will be eligible for support sponsored by SEAS under their recently awarded LEAD Grant.

2. projects and companies from the South East Asian region: these will be eligible for support sponsored by CTI PFAN

The Forum is being sponsored by SEAS under its recently awarded LEAD Grant and by CTI PFAN. The Forum constitutes a key component of SEAS and CTI PFAN initiatives to spur the development of high quality technologies and projects emerging from Singapore and the SE Asian region to support investment into the growth of a local and regional renewable energy sector and increase access to commercially viable clean energy..

The highest quality projects will be presented at the Forum to potential investors and financiers. The chosen finalists would be expected to be present at the Forum held as part of AFEF. Selected projects may also be considered for participation in CTI PFAN’s Asia Forum for Clean Energy Financing to be held in February 2013.

Developers of the selected projects will receive one-on-one coaching and mentoring from expert coaches for up to 5 days in August and September prior to the Forum.
For the selected regional applicants CTI PFAN will cover all coaching costs and travel to the Forum. Shortlisted Singapore based applications will enjoy exclusive coaching sessions at a subsidised rate for selected project covering up to 70% of mentoring, coaching and business development costs. The Forum will be conducted in a competition style and awards will be presented to those proposals with a high business potential.

Eligibility

For Singapore Based Projects
  • Any company that is registered and actively operating in Singapore may participate in the Renewable Energy Investor Forum. Companies based in Singapore based organisations with projects overseas are eligible for participation in this forum.
  • Special grants covering up to 70% of project / technology mentoring, design, panning and documentation development are available for Singapore based companies to assist them in preparing for this Investor Forum and also preparing for professional investor relations.
  • For Regional Projects
  • Any persons or company resident or actively operating and / or registered in Asia may participate in the Renewable Energy Investor Forum.

While there is no restriction on the size of the company / sponsor, the award is designed to reflect excellence in new ventures. Only business opportunities that require total (initial) capital in excess of US$1 million (or currency equivalent) will be considered. All proposals submitted will be screened for their level of completeness and investment readiness to insure the delivery at high quality pitches at the Forum.

The business must promote clean energy technologies, products or services that would in general include:
• Biogas
• Biomass
• Clean Transport
• Distributed Generation
• Emission Reduction
• Energy Efficiency
• Energy Storage
• Geothermal
• Hydropower
• Solar
• Storage Solutions
• Smart Grids
• Tidal / Ocean
• Waste-To-Energy
• Wind

Acceptable Business Plans

Plans eligible for the Forum may include, but are not limited to:
• New and existing ventures/ businesses including upstream technology development and downstream utility type projects
• Merger or acquisitions, including leveraged buyouts, which will lead to a turnaround, roll-up, or some other significant change that adds value to the current business
• Joint-venture, alliance or network-based business (e.g., create new entity from current enterprises)

Submission of Application

The submission of the Application to Participate together with the Project Proposal must be made by Wednesday, 5 September 2012 to reif@seas.org.sg

The highest-quality projects will be selected as finalists by the beginning of September 2012 to participate in the competition with exclusive access by invitation to the Renewable Energy Project Investor Forum as an incentive to enhance their understanding of project financing requirements, the pitching process and investor engagements. Less mature projects will be selected for ongoing mentoring and potential inclusion in subsequent forums.

The Project Proposal Template and Guidelines can be downloaded from the Forum website (http://www.seas.org.sg/reif). Participants selected to advance into the Renewable Energy Investor Forum 2012 will be notified by Wednesday, 12 September 2012.

Timeline

Stage 1: Application and Executive Summary Submission
The submission of the Application to Participate together with the Executive Summary must be made by Wednesday, 5 September 2012 to reif@seas.org.sg.

Stage 2: Coaching and Business Plan Preparation
Teams selected to advance into stage 2 will be offered one-on-one coaching. In this stage, SEAS and CTI PFAN advisors selected based on the scope of the respective business plan will assist the teams in preparing an investor ready business plan.

Singapore based companies can enjoy up to 70% funding of third party mentoring, business plan development and coaching services by SEAS under its LEAD Grant where as regional applicants will be fully funded by CTI PFAN.

Stage 3: Renewable Energy Project Investor Forum for Clean Energy Financing
Based on the business plans, PowerPoint slides and recommendations by the SEAS and CTI PFAN advisors, 5 finalist teams based in Singapore and 4 Regional finalist teams will be selected to pitch their projects at the Renewable Energy Investor Forum held during the Asia Future Energy Summit on 22 October 2012 as part of the Singapore International Energy Week.
All chosen finalist teams are to have at least one company representative to be present at this forum for the presentation to the investors and judging panel.

CTI PFAN is a multi-lateral public private partnership initiated by the Climate Technology Initiative that nurtures promising clean and renewable energy projects and businesses and connects them with investment and financing.
