Asia today is experiencing fast economic growth, and governments across the region are striving to meet the ever-rising energy demands of their population and their industries. This need for more energy, coupled with rising oil prices and increased consumer awareness on environmental issues, make an excellent case for sustainable energy. At the international level, there is increasing international cooperation to protect the environment from the deleterious effects of industrialization as seen in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol. At the national level, governments are integrating environmental factors into development processes in recognition of the merits of sustainable development. As an island nation, Singapore is very concerned about global warming and climate change, and is a signatory to the Climate Change Convention. As a responsible global citizen, it has recently acceded to the Convention’s Kyoto Protocol.
It is therefore timely for Singapore to initiate a gathering of corporations and individuals who are into the promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency(and the research and development related to RE & EE technologies), clean development mechanisms and carbon emissions trading. The Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore (SEAS) is the association for such corporations and individuals. It aims to be the regional and global entity for the promotion of energy efficiency and awareness, and the showcasing of renewable energy technologies. It will provide a platform for investors to engage with developers in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. SEAS will also promote awareness of global warming and climate change, and the issues that stem from the Kyoto Protocol, such as the facilitation of carbon asset management and carbon emissions trading. SEAS will engage with relevant government agencies, Ministries and industry associations(locally and globally) to implement the various programs for the Association. It will work closely on, and support programs that meet the national goal of sustainable development.
SEAS aims to be the voice of the sustainable energy industry and will represent the interests of all its member companies. It intends to develop and organize various programs and events including trade missions, exhibitions, conferences, workshops, business matching & networking sessions in Singapore and in as many regional countries as possible, particularly those with large potential markets like China and India . These events enable SEAS to provide a common platform to showcase and promote Sustainable Energy Technology and Management as well as Best Practices that are developed and implemented in Singapore by the industrial and the public sector. SEAS will also focus on capacity building, technology strengthening, and market intelligence accumulation to assist its members to grow sustainably in this very rewarding and challenging business.
I encourage all energy and energy related companies interested in tapping into this very large and lucrative sustainable energy market in the East Asian region, to join SEAS. Call the SEAS Secretariat or apply to join on-line. Join us today, and help build a more sustainable world for future generations.
